Core photo requirements
- Use a clear, sharp photo with the child facing the camera.
- Use a plain white or off-white background with no distracting texture.
- Avoid shadows on the face and background.
- Keep the child alone in the photo; no parent, hand, toy, or support should appear.
- Prepare a 2x2 passport-style photo and a correctly sized print layout.
Baby and toddler notes
The State Department says it is okay if a baby's eyes are not entirely open. Other children should have eyes open, face the camera, and keep a neutral expression where possible.
What we check
- Face visibility and centering.
- Plain light background and shadow risk.
- 2x2 crop and 4x6 print-sheet formatting.
- Common retake issues such as visible support, blur, or poor framing.
