Quick reference

US passport book photos are 2×2 inches, in color, on plain white or off-white background, taken within the last six months, showing your current appearance. The photo must be in focus, without shadows on the face or background, and without uniforms or camouflage (religious headwear is allowed with face fully visible).

For the authoritative list, use the State Department passport photo requirements.

Size and framing

  • Print and digital submissions use a square 2×2 inch format.
  • Head height (top of hair to chin) should fall within the range described in official guidance — typically roughly 50–69% of the image height.
  • Eyes should be open and visible; look at the camera.
  • Keep a neutral expression or natural smile; both ears need not be visible if hair covers them.

Background and lighting

  • Use a plain white or off-white wall or backdrop.
  • Avoid busy patterns, furniture, or other people in frame.
  • Stand a few feet in front of the background to reduce shadows.
  • Turn off overhead-only lighting if it casts shadows under the eyes or nose.

Clothing and appearance

  • Wear everyday clothing — no uniforms or camouflage.
  • Hats are not allowed except religious headwear that does not cast shadows on the face.
  • Glasses are generally discouraged if glare or frames obscure the eyes; check current official rules before you shoot.
  • Do not use filters or digital alterations that change your appearance.

Babies and children

Infants and toddlers follow the same 2×2 output. Official guidance allows some flexibility for babies (for example, eyes not fully open). Parents should not appear in the frame; support hands and props must not show.

Digital vs print submissions

  • Online renewal or upload portals usually want a digital file within stated pixel dimensions and file-size limits.
  • Mail or in-person applications often need physical 2×2 prints; many applicants print a 4×6 sheet with multiple 2×2 copies at a standard photo lab.

Retailers print your file as a normal photo order — they do not certify acceptance for your passport application.

How we help (without guaranteeing acceptance)

Passport Photo Rescue checks common issues — background, framing, head size, blur — and formats a 2×2 image plus a 4×6 print sheet. We are not a government agency. Final acceptance is determined by the issuing authority.
