Clothing rules for passport photos
US passport photos require everyday clothing that does not look like a uniform and does not blend into the background. You are not dressing for a formal event — you are meeting a clear, documented bar from the State Department.
See our full requirements guide for size, background, and expression.
What to wear
- Solid colors that contrast with a white or off-white wall — navy, green, burgundy, or similar mid-tones work well.
- Simple necklines — crew neck, collared shirt, or blouse without large logos.
- Layers — a jacket or cardigan is fine if it does not have obvious uniform styling.
- Religious headwear allowed when your full face is visible from hairline to chin, with no shadow on the face.
What to avoid
- Uniforms — military, airline, scout, sports team, or work uniforms with patches and insignia. Official guidance treats camouflage like a uniform.
- White or very pale tops on a white background — you can disappear into the backdrop.
- Busy patterns, large logos, or neon — distracting and harder to separate from the background in review.
- Hats and non-religious head coverings — not permitted.
- Sunglasses or tinted glasses — eyes must be visible; check current rules for prescription glasses.
Glasses and glare
If you wear glasses, anti-reflective coating helps. Tilt slightly to reduce glare, or remove glasses if reflections hide your eyes. Glare-related rejections are common — see common rejection reasons.
Hair and accessories
Hair may cover ears. Keep hair off the eyes. Small earrings are usually fine; large dangling jewelry can cast shadows or distract. Do not obscure your face with hands or props.
Babies and children
Dress babies in simple clothing contrasting with the sheet or backdrop. Avoid bibs with logos or bright cartoon graphics in frame. More in baby passport requirements.
Lighting interacts with clothing
Dark clothing under harsh overhead light can deepen shadows on the neck and face. Pair your outfit choice with soft front lighting — shadow avoidance tips.
We do not guarantee acceptance
We help check framing, background, and print layout. Final acceptance is determined by the issuing authority. Clothing is one factor among many.
