What is a 4×6 passport photo sheet?
A 4×6 inch print is a standard drugstore photo size. For passport applications, you often print a sheet that contains multiple 2×2 copies of the same image — typically a 2×3 grid (six photos) on one 4×6.
You cut out one 2×2 for your application and keep extras for renewals or other forms. Retailers print this as a normal photo order — not a passport validation service.
Before you print
- Start with a correct 2×2 digital file — sharp, plain background, proper head size. See US passport photo requirements.
- Use a six-up 4×6 layout (2×3 grid). Passport Photo Rescue delivers this layout after you format your photo.
- Export at print resolution (300 DPI at 4×6 is typical for lab orders).
How to order a standard 4×6 print
Online or in-store kiosk
- Go to the retailer’s photo print site (not a “passport photo” upsell unless you only want printing — they still do not guarantee acceptance).
- Choose 4×6 prints or single print.
- Upload your 4×6 sheet file as-is.
- Select matte finish when offered — glossy can glare when scanned.
- Pick up in store or ship to yourself per the retailer’s normal photo workflow.
At the counter
Some stores accept USB or mobile upload. Ask for a standard 4×6 photo print of your file. Do not ask staff to “approve” the image for passport use — they print what you provide.
After the print arrives
- Do not crop or resize the 4×6 at the kiosk if your file is already a six-up sheet.
- Use scissors or a trimmer to cut 2×2 squares along the guides.
- Check each cutout for blur or color cast before you attach one to an application.

Digital-only applications
If you apply online, you may only need the digital 2×2 — skip printing until you know your channel requires physical photos.
Common mistakes
- Uploading only a single 2×2 and letting the kiosk auto-crop — wrong size or head scale.
- Ordering glossy when matte is available.
- Using a screenshot or heavily compressed file — prints look soft.
Final acceptance is determined by the issuing authority. Printing at a retailer does not certify your photo.
